Yarn is a new medium which I have been exploring since coming to Montreal. I call the technique “painting” because the pieces of yarn are placed in the same way one would with painted strokes. Contrasting colors create color explosions. Pattern, line and form are major elements. People who one of these works for the first time think it is a painting but, on a second look, see the strokes as yarn and realize what the medium actually is. This reaction is compatible with what I am doing: painting with yarn. The works have the characteristics of a painting such as shading, gradations of color, color blending, directional strokes, color harmony and color contrast.
